Appropriate Population: 

  • 3 years and up
  • Moderate or mild delay or age-appropriate cognitive and language abilities

 

Goal: Understanding expected and unexpected social behaviours

 

Steps:

  1. Choose a suitable video from the social skills videos resource list.
  2. Watch this with the client and discuss what happened in the video/what was learnt from the video.

 

Step up: 

  • Discuss any unexpected social behaviours which the client has, why they are unexpected and what should be done instead.

 

Step down:

  • Provide more support when discussing what happened in the video.

 

Resources:

  • All About Social Skills– Animated introductory video into what social skills and social behaviours are and why they are important. 

 

  • Social Skills Video: Think it or say it– Role-play video discussing what should and shouldn’t be said out loud in social situations. 

 

  • Expected and Unexpected Behaviours– Animated video about different types of expected and unexpected social behaviours and how they make others feel

 

  • Hidden Social Rules– Animated video which gives examples of hidden social rules. Social situations provided in the video for AHA and client to discuss the hidden social rule and what they should do.
