Roll the die
Appropriate Population:
- 4 years and up
- Moderate or mild delay or age-appropriate cognitive, expressive and receptive language ability
Goal:
- Staying on topic
- Answering open ended questions
- Initiating and /or participating in a conversation
- Giving information
- Participating in a conversation topic around others’ interest
Steps:
- Source or create a large die (see resource section for printable die)
- Print 6 pictures of topics the client can talk about and glue each picture to a side of the die.
- Examples of pictures: a spider to represent fears they have, a bed to represent their bedroom, a family to represent their family, food to represent their favorite food, a game/toy to represent their favorite video games/toys
- Each person takes a turn to roll the die. Talk about the topic you land on for 3 minutes.
- Consider embedding this activity in a board game or any games that require a die.
Step up:
- Change the topics on the die to other topics
- Speak for longer period of time about each topic
- Take conversational turns around the topic
Step down:
- Give one sentence about the topic.
- Speak for short periods of time about each topic.
