Problem solving scenarios (videos)

Last Updated: 30 October 2024

Appropriate Population:

  • School-age (5 years and up)
  • Mild delay or age-appropriate cognitive and language abilities

Goal:

  • Identifying problems
  • Problem solving
  • Perspective taking
  • Identifying others’ emotions

Steps:

  1. Choose an appropriate video from the problem solving video list (see resources)
  2. Watch the video with your client and pause the video when a problem arises.
  3. Identify the problem together.
  4. Discuss possible solutions for the problem using the problem solving steps (given by AHP, if any)
  5. Decide on the best solution for the problem.
  6. To work on perspective taking, choose a problem where a character is feeling a negative emotion (ie: sad, angry, embarrassed). Discuss how the client can make this character feel better. (ie: give the character a hug if he is feeling sad).

Step up:

  • Provide less support to your client when solving the problem.
  • Discuss the pros and cons of each solution you and your client comes up with and pick the best solution.

Step down:

  • Provide more support and scaffolding.
