Therapy Activity

Plural nouns with structured conversation

Last Updated: 15 August 2023

Appropriate Population:

  • Preschool, school age.
  • Using words to talk.
  • Could also adapt this activity for a non-speaking child, and use an AAC device for naming items and increasing vocabulary.

Goal:

  • Increase awareness of plural -s.
  • Use plural -s appropriately within structured conversation.
  • Using correct grammar structures on an AAC device.
  • Increasing vocabulary.

Steps:

  1. Tell your client that you’re going to read a book and talk about it but that you’re going to be listening for the /s/ sound whenever there is more than one of something.
  2. Get out a book and start reading.
  3. Whenever you see plural nouns, ask a question like “what are those?”
  4. See if they include the plural –s at the end. If not, gently remind them by catching it like this “Oh listen! That picture has three cars so we need to say carssss”.

Step up:

  • Find singular nouns and ask the child what they would say if there were two or more of them?

Step down:

  • Read the book to the child and point out all of the plural nouns. Reminding them to listen for the- s sound at the end when there are two of things.
