Describing Family Members
Appropriate Population:
- School-age (or slightly below)
Goal: Using adjectives to describe people.
Potential target words: Tall, Short, Big, little, old, young.
Steps:
- Choose your target words, it is best just to choose one at a time.
- Collect some pictures of important people in the child’s life, these can be digital or printed.
- Choose your target word, it is easiest to start with just one concept e.g tall. If you think the child can manage it you can choose two opposites.
- Go through the photos together and
Variation: Involve their favourite toy, hide it somewhere and then give the child clues using preposition words. I.e “it is behind something, it is behind something black. It is behind the TV”
Step up:
- See if the child can suggest places for you to hide.
- See if the child can hide the toy and then give you clues (using preposition words) to find it as quickly as possible.
Step down:
- Hide the toy together around the room. See if you can find the best hiding place. Use multiple repeats of preposition words as you go.
