Activity 3: Conversation starters– Picking flowers (adapted from HomeSpeechHome.com)

 

Appropriate Population: 

  • 4 years old and up
  • Moderate or mild delay or age-appropriate cognitive and language abilities

Goal:

  • Staying on topic
  • Answering questions
  • Initiating conversation
  • Giving information

Steps:

  1. Tape the flowers (see free printable below) to popsicle sticks and write an open-ended question on the back of each.
  2. Stick the flowers into a pot/pebbles to keep them upright.
  3. Take turns choosing a flower and answering the question. Then, ask the next person the same question. 

Step-up: 

  • After answering the question on the flower, the client can ask the AHA a follow-up question around the same topic (instead of asking the AHA the same question).

Step down:

  • Give one sentence about the question.
