Appropriate Population: 

  • School-age (5 years and up)
  • Ability to read
  • Age-appropriate or mild delay in cognitive and language abilities

Goal: Identifying others’ emotions   

  • Perspective-taking
  • Understanding emotions
  • Expressing emotions

Steps:

  1. Create flashcards with the targeted emotions on them. 
  2. Take turns picking up a flashcard and acting out the emotion using your body language and facial expressions.
  3. The other person will try to guess the emotion.

Step-up: 

  • The person acting out the emotion can describe a situation or conversation where this emotion may be felt/conveyed. 

Step down:

  • Only the AHA acts out the emotion. The client will try to guess the emotion.
